Amherst Street Porch

When we purchased our home almost 5 years ago, we replaced the rotten sections on our Arts and Crafts style porch. The subsequent years proved to further rot the remainder of the porch requiring its complete removal.

The old porch actually leaned into the house and years of rain flowing into the house front rotted everything surrounding the porch all the way back to the interior plaster for the entire first floor. The first task was to completely replace the interior framing and sheathing and to cover it with Tyvek. We then constructed a new frame for the deck and built a mahogany deck.

While working on the front of the house, we decided to replace the roofs of both bay windows and replace the front concrete walk with red brick pavers.

Also, during the 1970's, the former owners placed a layer of cedar clapboard over the original clapboard in an effort to create a low-maintenance exterior. We had to remove this layer to replace the porch and found nothing wrong with the original clapboard so we decided to remove it all and preserve the original. If that wasn't enough work, we also decided to change the color of the house.

We always felt that the Arts and Crafts style porch was out of place. The other porches and bay windows on the house were a typical colonial design. After much debate, we decided to copy the other porches.

As of late, we have completed the porch frame and roof, but now need to complete the molding and trim. We've completed the repair of the house front and have a first coat of paint on the clapboard.

We will continue this project until it starts to snow. Stay tuned to see more pictures.
