Orton Place Street Porch


This 1880's house on Orton Place , near Symphony Circle , has had a porch sinking into the ground for several years. We agreed to remove and preserve the existing porch while stabilizing the porch base and frame. The owners wanted a new deck surface and better venting for the porch sub-surface.

After removing the deck surface and placing the columns and railings aside, we found that the existing framing needed replacement. The owners agreed. We also found that the original construction did not include any footings. The porch rested on soil for over a hundred years, which accounted for the sinking problem.

We placed 8 concrete footings, 48” deep, to support the new deck. We also used the house foundation for additional support.

After constructing a new frame and deck, we installed 2 additional side vents to provide ample air flow under the deck. We then placed the original clapboard and some replacement pieces to enclose the porch base.

The original columns had to be cut to fit the new porch level. We then put the railings back in place and constructed a new set of steps of mahogany for durability, which the owners later painted.
